The following check applies to 2.4L four-cylinder engines only. On 3.7L V6 engines, the thermostat is located at the lower radiator hose and the thermostat also allows a SO-percent flow of coolant when the engine is cool. Therefore, the check portion of this applies to the 3.7L V6 engine. Before assuming the thermostat is to blame for a cooling system problem, check the coolant level, drivebelt tension, and temperature gauge operation. If the engine seems to be taking a long time to warm up, the thermostat is probably stuck open. Replace the thermostat with a new one. If the engine runs hot and the upper radiator hose isn't hot, the thermostat is probably stuck closed. Replace the thermostat. If the upper radiator hose is hot, it means that the coolant is flowing and the thermostat is open. Consult the Troubleshooting section for cooling system diagnosis. To replace the thermostat, disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery and drain the cooling system. Follow the upper radiator hose to the engine to locate the thermostat housing. Squeeze the tabs on the hose clamp to loosen it from the hose, then detach the hose from the thermostat housing. Remove the thermostat housing from the engine and remove the thermostat. Clean the gasket mating surfaces and install the new thermostat with a new gasket. Install the thermostat housing and bolts onto the engine, reattach the hose, and refill the cooling system. Start the engine and check for leaks and proper thermostat operation. For 4.0L engines, disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and drain the cooling system. Remove the air filter housing and upper intake manifold. Remove the radiator tube mounting nuts and disconnect the hose from the thermostat housing. Remove the thermostat housing bolts and housing from the lower intake manifold, then remove the thermostat. Clean the mating surfaces and install the new thermostat with a new gasket or O-ring. Install the thermostat housing cover and reattach the hose. Install all previously removed components and reconnect the battery. Refill the cooling system and start the engine to check for leaks and proper thermostat operation.
