To remove the steering wheel, park the vehicle with the front wheels straight ahead and avoid turning the steering shaft during or after removal to prevent damage to the clockspring, which maintains an electrical circuit between the wiring harness and the airbag module. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. For 2013 and earlier models, turn the steering wheel to access the airbag module retaining screws. For 2014 and later models, locate the access holes on the bottom side of the wheel, use an angled pick or Allen wrench to push the retaining spring while pulling the airbag module outwards, and repeat for the opposite side. Unplug the electrical connectors for the airbag, horn, and other components, then remove the steering wheel bolt while marking the relationship of the steering wheel hub to the steering shaft. Remove the horn plate, reinstall the steering wheel bolt with a gap, and move the horn switch aside. Use a puller to remove the steering wheel, ensuring not to thread the puller bolts more than five turns to avoid damaging the clockspring, and ensure all electrical connectors are disconnected before lifting the steering wheel off the hub. If the clockspring needs removal, take off the steering column covers, unplug the electrical connectors, remove the mounting screws, and lift the clockspring from the steering column. For installation, ensure the airbag clockspring is centered with the arrows aligned, and if the steering shaft was turned, rotate the clockspring clockwise until it stops, then counterclockwise about 2.5 turns to align the arrows. Installation follows the reverse order of removal, ensuring the airbag clockspring is centered, aligning the marks on the shaft and steering wheel hub, using a new steering wheel bolt tightened to the specified torque, and enabling the airbag system.
