1988 Dodge Daytona Crankshaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What steps must be taken to remove the crankshaft and check its end play on 1988 Dodge Daytona?
A: Before the crankshaft can be removed, the front crankshaft oil seal housing has to be taken off together with the rear crankshaft oil seal housing together with the pickup tube and screen. First, align the stem with the crankshaft in the same plain with one of the crank throws and use it to check end play. Place the crankshaft to the rear and spin the dial indicator to zero; then, force the crankshaft to the front and read the movement; this shows the end play. If it does, look at the crankshaft thrust surfaces for wear, and if there is none, new main bearings may well cure the problem. If a dial indicator is not available, feeler gauges can be utilised by pressed the crankshaft to the front and then measuring the gap between the crankshaft thrust main bearing. After that, it is recommended to loosen the main bearing cap bolts up to the point where the caps can be entirely turned to remove hand tight, it is useful to mark these caps so you know where they belong for instance, there will be numbers from front to rear and there will be arrows pointing towards the front. If they are not already marked, be sure to label them appropriately.Use a soft-face hammer and tap the caps until they come off the block while using the bolts to lift the caps and avoid dropping any bearing insert that maybe come off with the caps. Last, take the crankshaft out of the engine, although, an additional pair of hands may be required due to its mass, and install the bearing caps on the corresponding positions on the engine block and tighten the bolts only lightly with fingers.
