• Q: How to remove and install the camshaft in four cylinder engine on 2000 Chrysler Cirrus?

  A: Camshaft of 2.0L engine can be removed after the cylinder head has been removed and the camshaft position sensor has been taken out. Sliding the camshaft out of the rear opening of the cylinder head taking extra care not to scratch the lobes or bearing journals and then take the front seal out. Until a 2.4L engine a sequence of operations includes the removal of the timing belt and the camshaft sprockets and the rear timing belt cover. The camshaft bearing caps are also marked so that they can be fitted in the right order; start by removing the outermost caps on both ends then ease off the rest of the caps to prevent bending. After that they must be lifted out and the camshafts marked to distinguish between INTAKE and EXHAUST. Take off the front seal of each camshaft, check the conditions of rocker arms and lash adjusters. Clean the camshaft(s) and gasket surface and check it for wear or damage as required. Camshaft end play should be check using a dial indicator by force the camshaft backward and forward and then compare it with the tolerance. When installing, the camshaft and the bearing journals should be cleaned before applying assembly lube or oil for its placement. Fit a new camshaft oil seal and the camshaft position sensor as well as the cylinder head and rocker arm shaft for the 2.0 liter engines. Camshafts of the 2.4L engine should be cleaned and its bearing journals as well as the valve lash adjusters and rocker arms lost in their correct positions if removed. Again fit the camshaft sprockets for the time being to align the timing marks and then fit the bearing caps and tighten the bolts in sequence.
