These models are fitted with an SAS, or airbag system, for the protection of the driver and front seat passenger, in the event of an accident which may cause serious injury. The system comprises of air bag modules mounted on the steering wheel hub as well as on the dashboard above the glove compartment; the driver's side air bag is mounted on the steering column horn. Control of the air bags is housed in the Airbag Control Module (ACM) located on the floor pan beneath the center console between the shift lever and the parking brake lever and containing the impact sensor. An airbag module comprises a housing that encloses the cushion and the inflater unit where the inflater assembly is fixed at the back of the housing to almost instantly inflate the bag as soon as receives an electrical signal. There is also a clock spring in the steering column to make sure that this signal gets through irrespective of the position of the steering wheel. The system has one impact sensor located in the ACM that functions as a threshold-activated switch that causes a circuit closure and subsequent deployment of the airbags during a major impact. In addition, the ACM has a sensing sensor, a capacitor that lays power charge for about two minutes after the battery detachment, and an independent microprocessor for overseeing the system performance. The AIRBAG light informs of system functionality; it blinks if normal, remains on if there is a fault and requires an immediate fix. To deactivate the airbag system if you are working close to the centre console, steering column or instrument panel, make sure that the steering wheel is in its straight position first, then turn on the ignition to the lock position and then remove the ignition key, disconnect the battery negative terminal and wait for at least two minutes. For enabling the system similar methods are carried out to make sure the steering wheel is straight, the ignition is off; reconnect the negative terminal of the battery; switch on the ignition switch to ground the ON position and check the airbag warning light in order to know if it is operational.
