Inspect each rocker arm for wear, cracks, and damage, particularly at the ball socket pivots and tips, and check the pivot seat and faces for galling and unusual wear patterns; replace any worn or damaged rocker arms and install new pivots or shafts as necessary. For shaft-mounted rocker arms, inspect the shafts for galling and excessive wear, and check the oil holes for plugging. Examine the pushrods for cracks and excessive wear at the ends, rolling each across a piece of plate glass to check for bending. When installing, ensure the longer rocker shaft bolt is placed correctly, and tighten the rocker shafts slowly, starting with the center bolts and moving outward, allowing at least 20 minutes for bleed-down after installation. Lubricate the lower end of each pushrod with clean engine oil or moly-base grease and install them in their original locations, ensuring they seat completely in the lifter socket.
