Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, then remove the transmission. For automatic transmissions, check and replace the transmission front pump seal, and for manual transmissions, replace the clutch assembly. Use paint or a center-punch to make alignment marks on the driveplate and crankshaft to ensure correct alignment during reinstallation. Remove the bolts that secure the driveplate to the crankshaft; if the crankshaft turns, jam a large screwdriver or prybar through the driveplate to keep it from turning, then remove the mounting bolts and bolt plate. On manual transmission models, discard and replace the flywheel bolts with new ones. Pull straight back on the driveplate/flywheel to detach it from the crankshaft. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring to align the matching paint marks. Use thread locking compound on the bolt threads and tighten them to the specified torque in a criss-cross pattern.
