If the key can barely be turned you may realize that it is not a problem with the ignition switch or ignition lock cylinder but could be a problem with out of adjustment transmission shift cable or the Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) cable. Make sure that you get the original ignition lock cylinder for the ignition key because getting a cylinder that does not fit the key will not work. Be sure to carry your ignition key and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) for the purpose of buying replacement ignition lock cylinder. It is inconvenient to replace an ignition key because it has a transponder - an RF signal encrypted that must be matched to the car's Sentry Key Remote Entry Module. First, you should have to remove the cable which is connected to the negative terminal of the battery. To do this, the ignition switch bezel has to be removed gently and following this, the instrument cluster bezel. To do this you have to insert the ignition key into the ignition lock cylinder and then turn it clockwise to the On position. Insert a small awl or punch in the hole of the retaining pin and apply pressure to unlock the ignition lock cylinder for it to be withdrew from the steering column. Before fitting a new ignition lock cylinder ensure that the car ignition key is kept on the ON position, position the D-shaped lug with the socket while pushing the lock cylinder in until it snaps into position. Removal and installation have similar procedures with slight differences, that is from installation point of view. After that, remove the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, turn off the airbag system, and also, eliminate knee bolster and reinforcement panel. Remove by loosening the lower mounting nut and two front mounting bolts, on the ignition lock cylinder/ignition switch assembly, also remove electrical connectors from the ignition switch and from the SKREEM. Pull the connector of the BTIS, then loosen the screw on the ignition switch and pull the release tabs to take out the ignition switch, and the process of fitting is a reversal of the removal process. On the keyless start button, you have to pry it under the instrument panel and remove the electrical connection wires. SKREEM/Wireless Control Module WCM is a relatively small black plastic unit installed to the left of the ignition switch/ignition lock cylinder housing which is part of the Sentry Key Remote Entry System. Depressing the Unlock button on the ignition key leads to the generation of an RF signal in the transponder encoded by the SKREEM/WCM which unlocks the doors and powers the rest of the modules in the vehicle. To unlock and lock the doors and trigger the security system, a Press of the Lock button is required. The key fobs known as SKREEM/WCM and the ignition key are designed to work with each other and if any of these items is replaced it will have to be reprogrammed at a dealership or an authorized repair shop.
