Dodge Colt Timing Cover Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the oil pump and Timing Cover on Dodge Colt?
    A:
To deal with the 1410 cc engine, as a first step, you should unscrew the oil pump cover plate and then you should secure the Timing Cover so that you could mark the faces of the gears for subsequent assembling. Thirdly put off the gears, wash they and check whether the teeth have worn out or chipped. Rebuild the gears and check the gap with feeler gauges as to the gap between the outer gear and Timing Cover, between the crescent and the outer gear, and the gap between the crescent and the inner gear. Place a straight edge across the Timing Cover to ascertain the gear end clearance and if the pump has one or more dimension in excess of tolerance, then replace the pump. Remove the pressure relief valve plug screw to remove the spring/Valve assembly but make sure if aftermarket spring the free length of the spring is 1.85 inches or 47 mm if the free length is less then use new one - Check that the valve plunger glides easily. In the case of the Panther clamping mechanism, always replace the oil seal in the Timing Cover. In the 1597 cc engine, the visible faces of the inner and outer rotors must be marked, after the removal of the Timing Cover and the oil pump cover. Take out the rotors and if you see a scoring or chipping on the tips you should know that , Refit the rotors and check clearances by inserting a feeler gauge between the tips of the inner and outer rotors, between the outer rotor and pump cover and by measuring endfloat of rotors in the oil pump cover with a straight edge on the cover flanges. As a result, pay attention to whether there are signs of wear on the shaft bush in the cover. Pull off the pressure relief valve plug to get out the spring and the plunger; the free length of the spring should be 1.85 in (47 mm); if it is less, it has to be replaced and the plunger has to slide in smoothly. Always fit the oil seal in the pump cover with its narrow part against that face and where an engine contains a silent shaft there is an oil seal which should be fitted on the right-hand side of top Timing Cover.
