The A-555 transaxle equipped with coarse-pitch gears produced by Getrag is used on vehicles with the Turbo II engine options; in addition, all cars underwent updates in 1987 to improve internal wear of the transaxles, and so their lubricant of choice must be SAE 5W-30 motor oil. The model and assembly number of the transaxle can be found in a tag attached on it. For turning the shift cable on the A-555 heavy-duty transaxle the following process should be taken: Pull the lock pin from the selector shaft housing and turn the lock pin round to have the largar end down and then insert it back to the hous. Slide the selector shaft in until it comes within the reach of the lock pin which in turn can be used to immobilize the shaft. Next pull out the gear shift knob, pull over the boot cover on the pull up ring and last but not the least to pull out the console. Release the cable adjusting bolt then using the adjusting screw tool and spacer block which are attached on the shifter support bracket insert this tool at the bottom of the shifter and tighten it to 20 inch pounds / 2NM. Secure the selector and crossover cable adjusting bolts and ensure that your torque is 70 in lbs or 8Nm since it plays the most decisive role. Subsequently, take out the adjusting screw tool and spacer block and place the spacer block and the adjusting screw finally to the shifter support bracket and fixed the lock pin with the big end up and fixed it to 105 in-lbs with 12 Nm. Last of all make sure that the shifter is working properly and then replace the console, boot and shifter knob.
