Dodge Durango Heater Core Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove the front and rear heater cores on Dodge Durango?
    A:
Let an auto AC professional empty the air conditioning system. Disconnect the cable from the ground nut of the battery. Drain the cooling system. Take out the covering on the right side of the front tire fender. Pull the heater hoses from their connection to the heater core at the firewall, and seal any outlet with tape or special plugging materials. Remove the instrument panel. You can take out the heater core from above the heating and air conditioner housing while keeping the housing connected to the car. Take off the support that holds the heater/air conditioning housing. Disconnect the bracket that holds the heater tubes to their position against the firewall of the engine compartment. New packing material goes on both heater core and tube at each connection. Remove four retaining clips to detach the tubes from both ends of the core and firewalls. Keep the seals from the fitting threads. Detach the bracket holding the heater core, then lift it out of where it sits in the housing. Place the heater core first, making sure all foam seals go on both the core and the evaporator. Reinsert the heater core carefully into its housing, then connect the rest of the pieces in reverse order you removed them, avoiding damage to any wiring where the body and housing meet. Refill the cooling system. Start the engine and check for proper operation. Ask the shop that took out the air to check and fix any leaks in your car's air conditioner system. We need to take out the entire rear heater/air cooling housing before we can replace the heater core. Call an auto air conditioning specialist to remove any remaining refrigerant from your car system. Take off the battery connection wire from the negative terminal. Turn off the engine, undo the refrigerant lines' bottom locknut, disconnect the fitting, and block up the answer holes to hold in clean air. You need to unscrew both heater hose attachments at the bottom of your car, and pull off the hoses by loosening their clamps. Remove the right rear interior quarter panel. Remove all air ducts that are connected to the heating/cooling unit's housing. Take off the electrical connector from the Blower Motor Resistor and every other wire connection connected to the housing. Carefully detach the housing's mounting screws, and after that lift it up and take it out carefully. Remove the blend door actuator. Take out the foam seal around the heater core and AC evaporator lines before lifting them out of the bottom of the housing. Unscrew the two brackets around the lines, then take off the outer bracket part. Loosen the heater core retaining screw, and slowly pull the core out of its housing. Installation is the reverse of removal. When fixing the air conditioning, throw away the O-rings and get new ones created for air conditioning work and suitable with R-134a refrigerant, and use the right refrigerant oil to lubricate them. Check the coolant level, adding as necessary. A qualified shop should take care of draining your system completely, filling it again, and checking for leaks.
