All models are fitted with an additional safety system referred to as the Supplemental Restraint System or SRS airbag, which protects the driver and a front seat passenger from severe injury in the event of head-on or frontal crash. This system comprises a control module installed under the floor console, an SVI unit near the steering wheel and in some models built-in to the sides of the front seats and above the glove compartment. But in the flooded airbag, the airbag inflator module that is usually placed in the centre of the steering wheel comprises of a housing of the cushion and the inflator unit; upon receipt of a specific electrical signal, the inflator inflates the bag virtually on the spot. A clockspring assembly located beneath the steering wheel delivers this signal irrespective of the latter's position to generate an ignition of the powder along with the bag. The passenger's one is larger than the driver's and is it incorporated in a steel reaction housing with a trim cover resembling the instrument panel's furniture. Some models equipped with side impact airbags located on frames of the outboard side of the front seat back and designed to protect the passengers in case of severe side impacts. The airbag control module controls the deployment of the airbags during an accident, the system is checked every time the car is started; if it registers a defect it will switch on the 'SRS' light. As a first step to disable the system before doing any wrestling near the wheel or SRS parts the steering wheels should be straightened, the negative terminal of the battery should be disconnected and one must wait for at least two minutes. It is important to do so as this may cause the airbag to deploy within the module and as a result puncture its fabric if placed on a surface with the opening facing down. Measurement of the resistance of the SRS components should not be performed at all; electrical welding is not allowed without disconnecting the airbag electrical connectors. Used or live airbag modules cannot be disposed on the road, hence they should be delivered to a dealer or a professional repair center. If there is any concern that the seat airbag module has a problem it is recommended that the removal and disassembly of the seat should be done by the dealer service department or the qualified repair shop.
