There are special tools used to do this process, it is wise to read the whole process then go and gather the necessary tools. On the 3.7L V6 engine, for adequate valve timing there are three timing chains; one is the primary chain that connects the crankshaft sprocket and idler gear sprocket while two other chains are the secondary chains that join the idler gear to the camshaft sprockets. First unhook the negative battery terminal, evacuate the coolant, and then take off the cooling fan, the emission accessory drivebelt, and the fan shroud. Remove the heater hoses and lower radiator hose, remove the power steering pump but not the fluid, if there's an alternator and air conditioning compressor remove them too. Raise the accessory drivebelt tensioner, reduce the valve covers and spark plugs as well as all the rocker arms for the purpose of aligning the camshaft sprocket. Unbolt and pull out the camshaft position sensor, lay the number one piston at the TDC on the exhaust side, unbolt the crankshaft damper/pulley, timing chain cover with water pump as a single assembly, and place a mark on the bolts for reinstallment. Place layers of rags over the top of
Oil Pan opening, deactivate the primary timing chain tensioner and take off the secondary timing chain tensioners. Remove the camshaft sprocket retaining bolts and very gently, utilizing the camshaft sprockets pulling on the secondary chains to reluctantly fit between time chain guides. Take off the idler sprocket bolt and then pull off the idler sprocket, crankshaft sprocket with the timing chains. Check states of cam sprockets, crank sprockets, chains and tensioners and replace the wearing out ones. For installation, reconnect the timing chain guides and tensioner pivot of the arms readjusting the proper torque and using the compound thread lock. Shorten and fasten the secondary timing chain tensioners and be certain that you fit the correct tensioner on the chain. Place timing chains into the idler sprocket and aligning the respective links; fit the main timing chain. Grease the idler shaft and bushing and then put the idler sprocket, crank shaft sprocket and the two timing chains together with an assembly and fit them onto the engine. Remove the bolt from the idler sprocket, and clean it before installing, make sure that the camshaft sprockets are placed in there right positions so as to enable the right rotation for the installation. Torque the camshaft sprocket bolts, make sure that all the timing chain links are correctly in place and remove locking pins from the tensioner. With the engine at TDC turn the engine two revolutions to double check the timing marks, then tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts. Remove any deposits on the timing chain cover and the engine block, set the timing cover and gasket in position and bolt the latter securing them with the required amount of torque. The rest of the installation work is done in reverse of the removal process and pipe sealant is applied on the cylinder head plugs to avoid dripping of oil.
