Dodge Nitro Timing Belt

The Timing Belt in Dodge Nitro is responsible for the proper movement of the crankshaft to rotor shaft so that engine valves may open and shut at the right times. This synchronisation is important for efficient working of the engine and is made possible through the interaction of the belt and crankshaft with aids of a tensioner pulley and idler pulley. Dodge Nitro models timing belts are made mostly of rubber reinforced with fibers and have numerous benefits such as low noise and cost than that of the older gears. Though, the changes in the timing belt design have been made over the years, now featuring curved teeth, which improves the parts' durability as well as reduces noise. Checking up the timing belt is quite crucial and should be replaced often in order to prevent total destruction of the engine especially for cars with interference engines.

Dodge Nitro Timing Belt Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the timing belt in four cylinder engine on Dodge Nitro?
    A:
Abandon the use of a Camshaft sprocket bolt to turn the crankshaft and do not rotate the crankshaft in the anti-clockwise direction. Also, avoid rotating the camshafts after the timing belt has been taken off to avoid cases where the valves clash with other valves or the piston. Start with the number one piston at Top Dead Center and then remove the connector of the negative terminal of the battery. Take off the air filter housing and tube, and afterwards the drivebelt. Make sure that the parking brake is engaged and that if applied that the rear wheels are blocked and the front end of the vehicle is securely supported on jack stands. I just took the drivebelt splash shield off underneath the car, then took a large bolt in the very center of the crankshaft damper pulley, using a large screwdriver or bar to keep the plastic pulley spinning while tightening the bolt with a socket and breaker bar. Place the 3-jaw puller to dismantle the damper pulley from the crankshaft, and in this case, use the right insert not to harm the crankshaft thread. Is the pulley stuck, If so hit the center of the bolt of the puller lightly with a brass mallet. Lose the drive belt tensioner and pulley that is below the alternator, and then also lose the lower and upper timing belt covers. On this note ensure that the timing marks on the camshaft are properly lined and that the mark on the crankshaft timing belt sprocket and the stationary index mark on the oil pump housing tally. Place a 6 mm Allen wrench into the belt tensioner and then using a smaller Allen wrench turn the tensioner anti-clockwise as you press it. Take out the timing belt and take the opportunity to closely check the tensioner pulley and the idler pulley for rough textures and excessive movement and replace the parts where possible. Look for any signs of wear, or chip, in the sprockets then examine the timing belt for cracks, separation, wear, chipped teeth and possibility of oil contamination and replace it if you suspect it could be bad. Make sure that timing mark of crank shaft timing belt sprocket is straight to TDC mark on crank pully, while doing this the stationary index mark on crank pully must match the oil pump housing.Knowing this clock wise turn the exhaust cam shaft bolted sprocket to slightly below the intake cam sprocket. Place the timing belt on the crank shaft sprocket then over the water pump sprocket, second tension shaft pulley, cam shaft sprockets and the timing belt tensioner moving the exhaust cam shaft anti , clockwise until the marks on the cam sprockets are aligned. Pull the Allen wrench out of the tensioner, in case of a new tensioner assembly, pull the pin. Another step is to rotate the crankshaft for another 720 degrees checking whether the TDC marks / camshaft sprocket timing marks coincide; If no, re-check the belt. Last, it is necessary to fit the upper and lower timing belt covers, fasten they screws, fit the drivebelt idler pulley, tighten its bolt, fit the crankshaft vibration damper and washer together with the pulley bolt, tighten the pulley bolt and complete the works in the reverse of the disassembly.
