To do this, one has to first unscrew the Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) and the camshaft target magnet and then the
Timing Belt so as to get to the valve cover. Then, photos can be removed the camshaft sprockets and the rear timing belt cover. The camshaft bearing caps are also marked for position within the cylinder head and these must be refitted in the same position; the front and rear bearing caps should be removed first, then the rest of the caps, while loosening the bolts very slowly to avoid bending the camshafts. In case the caps are tightly on, one may use the bolts as bar to pry or tap gently with a soft face mallet. Lift both camshafts out of the cylinder head with care showing an identification between INTAKE and EXHAUST. Check and, if possible, remove the front seal from each camshaft and talking about the
Rocker Arms and the so called
Lash Adjusters. Scrub the camshaft(s) and gasket surface with solvent and look for wear or damage tolerances, after checking the oil camshaft bearing journal diameters and the inside diameter of the bearing surface to decide oil clearance Camshaft should be changed if worn. If, when inspecting the camshaft, you find it is worn, damaged or otherwise unsuitable for use, replace it, as well as the rocker arms and the lash adjusters if required, and assess the state of the cylinder head. Subsequently grease the camshaft(s) and cylinder head bearing journals, if the location allows, put the camshaft back in the same position but do not reinstall the rocker arms. Depending on the tolerance, the camshaft endplay should be set by prying the camshaft fully to the rear and front and reading the values on a dial indicator installed to measure the travel. As for the installation, locate the valve lash adjusters and the rocker arms, clean and lubricate the camshaft and the bearing journals, and finally put the cams back in their original places having regard to the timing marks while making sure that the crank is set properly. Fit in the bearing caps and torque the bolts in a preset pattern, use of anaerobic sealant on certain bearing caps before fitting and torquing the bolts. Last of all replace the camshaft oil seals, timing belt, covers, and other related parts, and lastly put back the valve cover.
