First of all, remove the black cable of the battery. The VSS is situated on the upper part of the transaxle extension housing adjacent to one of the inner CV joints, and can be reached either from the top, involving the removal of the air filter housing, battery, and battery tray bracket, or from below, with the help of securely jack-up the car on jackstands. For all models with a manual transaxle, unplug the VSS electrical connector, then remove the VSS retaining bolt and take the VSS out, then remove the pinion driven gear and durch the old O-ring. Replace this with a new O-ring coated and cleaned with fresh oil; replace the drive gear and VSS and fasten it with the retaining bolt tightened to the recommended torque. For the year 2000 and 2001 models fitted with an automatic transaxle, the VSS electrical connector should be disconnected, the hold-down bolt to be undone and the VSS assembly to be taken out and while doing this the pinion driven gear should be swapped if required. Remove the old O-ring and replace it with a new one; clean the oil on the new O-ring and then install the pinion driven gear and make sure it is well seated in its proper place. For the cars made in 2002 and further, you have to disconnect the input shaft VSS electrical connector, to unscrew and to take out the input shaft VSS, then you have to discard an old O-ring and to install a new one, before a regular tightening of the given sculpture to the prescribed happy-turns of torque. The process is virtually repeated on the output shaft VSS where you first detach the electrical connector, loosen the VSS, remove the messed up O-ring, and replace it with a new one before Tightening the VSS output shaft.
