Jeep Comanche Power Steering Pump

Jeep Comanche automobiles contain Power Steering Pump that play the role of converting power from the engine to hydraulic power so that the steering will be easy. This pump works through building fluid pressure helpful in controlling the movement of the car especially when in slow motion or even when it is stationary. The pump can be located towards the front under the hood and it usually employs a V belt or serpentine belt to be driven by the crankshaft and the fluid reservoir maybe internal or external. Several Jeep Comanche models have come with hydraulic power steering that will always have a mechanical link between the steering wheel and the wheels in case the power steering fails, the vehicle can be manually steered. Hydraulic setups are normal while some may contain electronic systems where power assist may vary with the speed at which the vehicle is running. The power steering pump that can be found in Jeep Comanche is known to develop some problems such as leakage, noise, and fluctuation of the steering assistance and therefore may require inspection or replacement.

Jeep Comanche Power Steering Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install a power steering pump on Jeep Comanche?
    A:
Loosen the pump drivebelt and slip the belt over the pulley. Using a suction gun, suck out as much power steering fluid from the reservoir as possible. Position a drain pan under the pump and disconnect the high pressure line and fluid return hose. It may be necessary to remove the air cleaner housing for access to the return hose. Cap the ends of the lines to prevent excessive fluid leakage and the entry of contaminants. Remove the front attaching bolts and the rear attaching bolts and nuts, then lift the pump from the engine. If it is necessary to remove the pulley from the pump, first measure how far the pump shaft protrudes from the face of the pulley hub. Remove the pulley from the shaft with a special power steering pump pulley removal tool. This tool can be purchased at most auto parts stores. A special pulley installation tool is available for pressing the pulley back onto the pump shaft, but an alternate tool can be fabricated from a long bolt, nut, washer and a socket of the same diameter as the pulley hub. Push the pulley onto the shaft until the shaft protrudes from the hub the previously recorded amount. Installation of the power steering pump is the reverse of the removal procedure. Be sure to bleed the power steering system following the procedure.
