- Q: How to replace a rear coil springs and shock absorber assembly on Jeep Compass?A:Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts and raise the vehicle on jackstands. Remove the rear wheels. Remove the rear shock absorber/coil spring assembly. If servicing both shocks, mark the parts right and left. Compress the coil spring with a spring compressor, following the tool manufacturer's instructions. Compress the spring until tension is removed from the upper bracket. Hold the damper shaft with a wrench and remove the damper shaft nut. While keeping the spring compressed, remove the shock through the bottom of the spring and inspect all parts for damage. Replace any damaged parts. Install the parts on the new shock in the following order: lower spring isolator, spring, upper spring isolator, dust shield, jounce bumper, washer, bushing, sleeve, upper mounting bracket, bushing, washer, nut. Ensure the upper mount is oriented correctly. Install the washer and damper shaft nut, tightening to the specified torque. Slowly release tension from the spring by backing off the spring compressor. Ensure the spring has settled in the locator holes and the brackets/mounts are not twisted or off-center. Install the shock absorber/coil spring assembly.
