Before proceeding to the removal of the exhaust manifold, one has to disconnect the negative terminal from the battery. The rear wheels should be blocked, the parking brake should be engaged, the front of the vehicle should be lifted and held on jackstands. Remove the nut by loosen the bolt at the exhaust manifold sided of the exhaust pipe. For the right side exhaust manifold on 4.7L VS models, release the drivebelt, then change the engine coolant, disconnect the air inlet duct and the air filter housing. Subsequently, the air conditioning compressor and the accumulator bracket must be being withdrawn; then, it is necessary to discharge the heater hoses at the engine and then to take out the starter. For either manifold on all models, remove the exhaust manifold heat shields, withdraw the exhaust manifold mounting bolts and then pull the manifold off the vehicle. Before bolting up, remove any gasket material from the surfaces and also check for manifolds warpage by use of a straight edge on the manifold. If needed, get your manifold to an auto machine shop for reconditioning of the surfaces. As earlier stated align the exhaust manifold in place with a fresh gasket and tighten the mounting bolts with your fingers. Successively tighten the mounting bolts from the center going outward in several sequences of tightening to the correct torque and do the same to the heat shield bolts. They should be reinstalled in reverse order that they were removed and if one is servicing a right-side exhaust manifold on a 4.7L engine then the cooling system should be refilled. Last join the engine and then search for the noise of exhaust between the manifold and cylinder head and between the manifold and exhaust pipe.
