5.7L V8 (Hemi) engines have came with the Multiple Displacement System (MOS) which comes with a special type of camshaft that one will have to change to the one used with the MOS. First, turn off the fuel pump and disconnect the negative terminal from the battery and also drain the oil cooler circuit. Then the
Timing Chain cover, timing chain, sprockets, and the cylinder heads need to be taken off and then the radiator. Undo the Lash Adjuster rail mounting bolts and Lash Adjusters from the engine block and ensure you indicate which of the Lash Adjuster is to be placed where or in which direction. When removing the Lash Adjusters, use the suitable equipment but should not use pliers if one wants to replace them. Measure the end play of the camshaft with a dial indicator and note this period before the camshaft is pulled out. Loosen the camshaft thrust plate and then take the plate out and using a long rod just pull the camshaft. Following removal, wash the camshaft and then check bearing journals for perform or damage, the micrometer check should in millimeter. It is also recommended to measure the height of every cam lobe and found a mean to compare and find out high variations. Checks the camshaft lobes for any form of burn or wear down and clean the Lash Adjusters. If new Lash Adjusters are used then a new camshaft has to be inserted in the car as well. The Lash Adjusters and cam shafts have a close relationship. Before the camshaft is installed, it is recommended that the camshaft bearing journals and lobes should be lubricated. Afterwards, the camshaft can be gently slid into its place into the engine. Flange the camshaft thrust plate and timing chain so that the timing marks are on top of each other. Coat the Lash Adjusters with clean engine oil then fit them into their respective slots, then the Lash Adjuster rail along with the mounting bolts. Begin rewiring and installing the components in the reverse order to which they were removed, change the oil and filter, fill the cooling system to maximum, and after starting the engine wait for oil pressure and leaking. That is if new components have been fitted, rev the engine for 15 to 20 minutes at fast idle which helps to seat the new components, and change the oil and filter after the first 500 miles.
