Jeep Wrangler Accelerator Cable

The Jeep Wrangler Accelerator Cable is the steel-cored connection that translates foot pressure into throttle movement, allowing your engine to receive the airflow it needs for smooth acceleration. The Accelerator Cable connects the pedal to the throttle plate on carbureted models. The throttle plate is positioned inside the carburetor barrel. As the pedal opens wider, air is drawn in. As a result, the venturi pulls more fuel from the float bowl. Jeep Wrangler CJ predecessors often relied on rigid rod linkages to connect gas pedals to throttle bodies. In contrast, Wrangler generations opted for the flexible Accelerator Cable. The lighter weight reduces vibration and makes routing simpler. However, some high-output versions retained a short linkage at the throttle end to provide added stiffness. The fuel-injected Wranglers that are offered later by Jeep still use an Accelerator Cable that now swings a throttle body blade rather than a carburetor plate, but the acceptably familiar pedal response is there for Jeep performance enthusiasts and every modern Wrangler driver, so the Accelerator Cable lives on.

Jeep Wrangler Accelerator Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Remove an Accelerator Cable on Jeep Wrangler?
    A:
2007 and later models do not have an accelerator cable- the Throttle Body is controlled electronically by the Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) sensor. To remove the cable, start by prying the cable end from the throttle valve pivoting ball using a small screwdriver. Then, depress the cable-to-bracket fitting with a pair of pliers and pull the cable through the bracket. Inside the driver's compartment, depress the throttle pedal and remove the cable stop through the larger opening. Finally, remove the cable from the engine compartment by squeezing the tang with a pair of pliers and pushing the retainer through the opening. Installation is the reverse of removal.
