Jeep Wrangler Pushrod

The Jeep Wrangler Pushrod enables the correct opening and closing of a vehicle's valves, which gives the legendary 4x4 its dependable torque. In conventional OHV engines, the Pushrod travels above the cam lobe, activating the rocker arm and adjusting the intake and exhaust flow, thus ensuring that compression remains strong. The early Wrangler YJ and TJ relied exclusively on this simple steel rod. Jeep preferred this simple design because of the rod's compact height. This let Jeep keep the engine low to give the hood better clearance. Subsequent generations of the JK and JL Wrangler maintained the OHV valve rod arrangement in Jeep V6 and V8 options, showing that the design still balances durability with easy service. A straight Pushrod will maintain your valve lash. A bent Pushrod will upset timing, make a ticking sound, and may allow the pistons to kiss the valves. Adequate spring pressure and lash checks are critical. Although followers are applied in overhead cam heads, the tried-and-true Pushrod arrangement still delivers the rugged reliability owners expect from the Wrangler mission.

Jeep Wrangler Pushrod Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and reinstall rocker arms and pushrods while ensuring proper maintenance and inspection in 4.0L and 4.2L V6 engine on Jeep Wrangler?
    A:
Remove the valve cover and, beginning at the front of the cylinder head, loosen and remove the rocker arm mounting bolts in pairs, alternating between the intake and exhaust rocker arms, loosening each bolt 1/4-turn at a time. Remove the rocker arms, bridges, and fulcrums, storing them with their respective mounting bolts in marked plastic bags to ensure reinstallation in their original locations, while noting that the bridges may be reinstalled in any location. Remove the pushrods and store them separately to avoid mixing during installation. Check each rocker arm for wear, cracks, and other damage, particularly where the pushrods and valve stems contact the rocker arm faces, as well as the fulcrum seat and faces for galling, stress cracks, and unusual wear patterns; replace any worn or damaged rocker arms and install new fulcrums. Ensure the oil hole at the pushrod end of each rocker arm is open, inspect the pushrods for cracks and excessive wear at the ends, and roll each pushrod across a piece of plate glass to check for bending. Lubricate the lower end of each pushrod with clean engine oil or moly-base grease and install it in its original location, ensuring each pushrod seats completely in the lifter socket. Bring the number one piston to Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke, apply moly-base grease to the ends of the valve stems and the upper ends of the pushrods before placing the rocker arms in position, and also apply moly-base grease to the fulcrums to prevent damage to the mating surfaces before engine oil pressure builds up. Install the rocker arms, fulcrums, bridges, and bolts in their original locations, tightening the bolts to the specified torque, then install the valve cover. Start the engine, listen for unusual valve train noises, and check for oil leaks at the valve cover joint.
