Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands while applying the parking brake, then remove the wheel. Detach the upper shock absorber stem by removing the upper nut, washer, and rubber grommet for models from 1987 to 1995, using an open-end wrench to prevent the stem from turning; if the nut is rusted, apply penetrating oil and allow it to soak, possibly using locking pliers to hold the stem. Next, remove the lower shock mounting nut and bolt to detach the lower end of the shock absorber from the axle, then pull the shock absorber out from the wheel well, taking off the washers and rubber grommets from the top. For installation, extend the new shock absorber fully, position a new washer and rubber grommet on the stem, and guide the shock into the upper mount, ensuring the grommets are centered by wiggling the stem before securely tightening the stem nut. Finally, install and tighten the lower mounting bolts and nuts securely.
