Jeep Wrangler Throttle Cable

The Throttle Cable of a Jeep Wrangler provides the essential mechanical link between the driver's foot and the engine. Pedal movement swings the throttle plate to manage airflow and power output. The early sport utility versions of the Jeep, the classic Wrangler editions, applied a braided steel Throttle Cable that ran from the accelerator pedal to the throttle body shaft. Thus, when you press the pedal and pull the butterfly valve open, the powertrain control module sensors notify the engine to add fuel. The design of a Throttle Cable allows for easy inspection in case of delays. As technology progressed, Jeep incorporated electronic throttle control on later Wrangler years. This innovation replaced the conventional Throttle Cable. The Wrangler now employs pedal position sensors and an electric motor to reposition the Throttle Cable plate. The electronic throttle control works well with traction and stability systems. It also avoids sticking or stretch that may plague cables. As a result, there are now two different types of the unit. The original version is the cable-driven type. The new design is the drive-by-wire type. The main difference is that of a tangible steel pull versus PCM-directed electrical pull. The other differences are more or less based on the Wrangler generation. This gives the current Jeep fan a clearer idea of which part to buy.
