Place the shift lever in Park. Remove the center console for console-mounted shifters, or the gauge bezel and steering column covers for dash-mounted shifters, or the steering column covers and knee bolster for column-mounted shifters. Disconnect the shift cable from the ballstud and remove the "C" clip. Raise the vehicle securely on jackstands, ensuring the rear is also raised to verify the transmission is engaged in Park. Pry the shift cable end from the transmission shift lever, verify the manual shift lever is in the Park position, and ensure the park lock pawl is engaged by checking the driveshaft. Reconnect the shift cable, lower the vehicle, and ensure the engine starts with the parking brake applied. Tighten the adjuster screw for console-mounted shifters, and snap the cable end back onto the ballstud for dash and column-mounted shifters.
