If hard shifting is being experienced, both cables should be disconnected at the transaxle and the shifter should be operated; if shift lever glides smoothly through all the positions when cables are disconnected, the crossover cable has to be adjusted. In order to pull and replace the shift cables, lift the hood and cover the left fender with a blanket. Pull the negative battery cable off the ground stud at the left shock tower, then take out the air cleaner assembly. Bend the lock tab on the select lever and remove the selector cable and crossover cable from it with 2 flat blade screwdrivers, don't press hard on cables in order to avoid damaging the bushing of them, and the retaining clips should be discarded. Take the cable retaining clips off the transaxle and disconnect the cable from the bracket, dispose the clips. Open the car and lose the center console, and next lift the front of the car, strapping it with jackstands. Get rid of the shifter cable grommet plate and pull the grommet from the floor pan, to release the cables from the bracket present on the shifter side, shred the clips also. Disconnect the selector cable and crossover cable from the shift lever assembly with the equal force and pull the servo cable assembly out of the vehicle, also, release the support clips that locates above the catalytic converter. For the installation, reverse the procedures used during the removal process; however, it is necessary to install new cable retaining clips at all the points noticed and adjust the crossover cable before reinstalling the air cleaner assembly together with the center console. Only the crossover cable can be adjusted; loosen the crossover cable adjusting bolt at the shifter end, position the crossover lever on the transaxle to align the holes, insert a 1/4 inch drill bit through the crossover lever into the raised boss, it should go in about 1/2 inch at least. Put on the gear shift lever and the tighten crossover cable adjusting bolt to the prescribed torque and then take it out, using a tracker drill bit), shift the transaxle through all the gear positions and check if it works fine and then fine-tune the lever before putting back on the center console and the air cleaner assembly.
