For any hard shifting, it is recommended that the cable be disconnected at the transaxle then shift the car using the shifter located in the driver seat; if the shift lever glides through all the positions easily with the cable disconnected then the cable maybe adjusted. To change out the shift cable one must lift up the hood as well as place a blanket over the left fender. Take out the air filter housing, battery and the battery tray also remove the shift cable from the shift lever using two flat blade screwdrivers in order to dismantle it. Pull the shift cable away from the bracket, then, as for inside the vehicle, take out the shift knob set screw and shift knob. Then, unbolt the center console, as well as the gearshift indicator lamp in the shift trim bezel, and then the screws of the latter. With a flat-blade screw drive, the electrical shift cable end should be removed from the shift lever pin and the cable conduit end pulled gently from the shift mechanism. Plastic nut/screw that holds the grommet plate to the floor pan then raise the car on jack stands and uninstall the catalytic converter heat shield. Last, undo the fastener of the last grommet plate and pull the cable from the vehicle. If the installation, go under the hood to fit the shift cable in the bracket which is used for the shift lever post and tight it to fix it in its place. Check if the shift lever is in the park position; if yes, install the shift lever on the shifter boot through the floor pan passing through the boot shifter cable. Put the plate-to-floorpan fasteners in place, lower the car, and fix the end of shift cable to the shift lever pin. The rest of the installation procedure is the reverse of the removal and fine-tune the shift cable. In the cabin of the car screw the shift knob set screw and knob, shift the gear shift lever to the Park position on the gear shift and screws the gear shift cable adjustment screw. The shift lever should be in the Park position and located at the transaxle; shift to the Park position, lock the rearmost gearbox synchro pin, apply the brake pedal to lock the differential, and pull on the shift lever while revolving the vehicle around in circles to make sure the park sprag is engaged. On the center console, locate the shift cable adjustment screw and rotate it clockwise to draw it tighter, after which install the center console back into the vehicle and give the shift a test to ensure that it does not bind during operation and the engine can only start while in the Park or Neutral tranny gears. At last, just put the transaxle in all gears to check the cable operation and then adjuts if needed.
