Chrysler Cirrus Shift Cable

With Chrysler Cirrus Shift Cable you get a direct, accurate link between the console shifter and the transmission so each gear engages smoothly and confidently. The early production models of the Chrysler Cirrus, which are equipped with manual transaxles, make use of a twin Shift Cable system that runs from the floor lever to the transmission, with each cable sealed up to avoid any grime contamination. Later model Chrysler automobiles equipped with automatics carry a single Shift Cable that pushes or pulls on the transmission manual arm. The Shift Cable layout follows the PRNDL order, working with the button on the handle to prevent accidental shifts. The dual manual layout permits both selection and cross gate movement, while the lone automatic line drives simple fore aft motion, which makes the manual version slightly more complicated and heavier. If a Shift Cable frays, either style can stretch, bend, or break, causing a loose feel, missed gears, or even a stuck lever. Change out the Shift Cable and you are back to factory crispness. The original Chrysler design uses steel core wire, nylon jacket, and greased bushings to keep every Cirrus sedan light, quiet, and reliably mechanical.

Chrysler Cirrus Shift Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you check and adjust the shift cable and its components in Automatic transaxle on Chrysler Cirrus?
    A:
To make sure of cable adjustment, one has to apply the brakes and turn the ignition switch on while the key is in all positions starting with PARK and NEUTRAL the back-up lamp should light up and the starter motor should operate only in PARK or NEUTRAL. If the engine starts in any other gears, have the cables that operate the gear shift checked and the light switch must also be checked. Check that both NEUTRAL and DRIVE detents are within the limit of the gearshift gate stop and align the shift cable if required. For removal, pull hood release inside car, cover the left fender with a blanket, unbolt and connect the negative terminal of the remote battery and remove the air cleaners. Unplug the positive cable and take out the Transmission Control Module, move the PDC aside so it can be worked on. Push up the shift cable from the manual lever on the transaxle as much as possible with two flat blade screwdrivers, then, take out the M8 bolt and washer which fix shift cable bracket on it and then unplug the shift cable. Within the car, unbolt the center console, pull out the shift cable from the gear shift lever pin and unscrew the shift cable hold down clip. Lift the vehicle well and safely on jackstands, then unbolt the shift cable grommet on the floorpan, and then pull out the shift cable assembly. For installation, take the shift cable and run it through the opening located in the floorpan and fasten it to the floorpan bracket and at last connect the end of the cable to the gear shift lever pin and then connect the manual shift lever of the transaxle. Finally, be certain the shift cable bracket bolt is tight and the shift cable adjusted, the remaining steps are backwards of this. For adjustment, pull out the negative cable, shift the knob into PARK, loosen the knob adjusting nut and see to that the shift lever on the transaxle too is in PARK. Rock the PARK sprag engaging the sprag back and forth, and tighten the adjusting nut properly; test the shift lever for its smooth operation, re-adjust if necessary, re-fit the center console and finally reconnect the negative cable.
