The Park/Neutral/Back-up light switch located at the lower left side of the transaxle near oil pan or black insulator was designed for preventing the starter motor engagement unless the gearshift lever is in PARK or NEUTRAL position and at the same time complete the back-up light circuit when in REVERSE. However, before checking on the switch status, make sure the
Shift Cable is correctly aligned. Start by lifting the car off the ground and supporting it with jackstands, next remove the two clips that hold the transaxle splash shield in place. Pull the covering part of the switch and unfold the electrical connector then disconnect it; use the ohmmeter to probe the center terminal and the switch body; the switch must only have continuity to PARK and NEUTRAL; if continuity is felt in any other position then the switch should be replaced. Then, the continuity shall exist between two outer terminals only when switch is placed in the REVERSE and no continuity shall exist between each outer terminal and the switch body; replace switch in case any check fails. Thereafter replace the transaxle splash shield and with the aid of the push-in fasteners fasten it into place then lower the car. For replacement, follow the same procedures as the initial steps, involving lifting of the vehicle and the removal of the splash shield, then separation of the electrical connector on the switch as well as placing of drain container under the transaxle to capture any loss of fluid. Remove the switch by loosening the nut on the front of it by using a box-end wrench: the switch seal should be eliminated. Engage the assisted transaxle shifting from PARK to NEUTRAL, and visually check the alignment of internal operating fingers through the switch opening. Replace the new switch and seal into the area and after that tighten it up to the standard torque required and once again check the operation of the switch. Last but not least connect the electrical connector, install the splash shield back, lower the car, and check the level of the transaxle fluid and add some if needed.
