    Q:
How to Replace the Shift Cable and Crossover Cable Assembly on Dodge Neon? Posted by Customer
    A:
The selector cable and crossover cable are bundled together and have to be replaced as a single unit. To dismantle you will need to start by undoing the gearshift knob and lever boot, then proceed to the removing the center console. Then, it is necessary to take off the clip fastening the selector cable to the shift lever and shift the cable off, using a sharp-end of needle-nose pliers to remove the cable retaining clips and using a flat-bladed screwdriver to pry the cables from the shifter. Do the same for the crossover cable, then take out the grommet plate to floor pan fasteners, and the air filter housing assembly. If fitted, also disconnect the accelerator cable and the cable of the cruise control. Take two flat blade screwdrivers to free the crossover and selector cables from the shifter levers and then take both cable clips and pull the cables from the bracket. Lift the car up on jackstands', then work beneath to remove the catalytic converter heat shield and the final bolt and cable grommet from the floorpan, and ultimately, the cable assembly from under the car. When installing cross-over cables, work in the reverse order of the removal and do not forget to fit new Cable Retaining clips and possibly reposition the cross-over cable. Out of all the cables, only the crossover cable contains an adjustment; in 2000 models, use the 1/4 inch drill bit to align the hole at the levler in the raised boss of the transaxle with the screw of the shifter adjusted loose, place then your shifter lever at Neutral, adjust the screw tightly without shifting the levler, then check the shifting pattern. On 2001 and later models, releasing the adjustment screw will cause the levers to return to their neutral position; one can then tighten the screw and ensure that the rpms are right.

    Q:
What precautions should be taken before attempting the shift cable removal and installation procedure on Dodge Neon? Posted by Customer
    A:
One should not do this process when the vehicle's engine is hot, mainly because all the parts one will be interacting with are well, hot, and this can at best lead to severe burns. When hard shifting, unbolt the cable at the transaxle and work the shifter on the driver's side; when the shifter glides through all its positions without the cable connected, modify the cable accordingly. To replace the shift cable, lift the hood and cover the left fender with a blanket in order to prevent a scratch. Have the air filter housing and the battery including the battery tray as its components dismantled. Switch off the car and turn it off ,then in the engine compartment with the help of two flat blade screwdrivers unlock the shift cable from the shift lever then from the bracket. Inside the vehicle you then have to take out the shift knob set screw and the knob from the shifter and also the center console. Disconnect the gearshift indicator lamp and take out the shift trim bezel screws and the trim together with the lamp. Be very gentle in removing the shift cable end on the shift lever mounting stud and take the conduit end away from the housing. Take out the grommet plate-to-floor-pan bolts, jack the car up on scissor jack stands and remove the catalytic converter heat shield and the intermediate pipe heat shield from below. In the passenger compartment, the last of the grommet plate fasteners is then eliminated, and the cable is pulled out of the car. For installation, begin by its installation of shift cable on the bracket that is in the engine compartment then fitting it securely in the shift lever post. Check that the shift lever is in park, raise the car again and thread it through to the floor pan and up through to the shifter. After that fit the grommet plate-to-floorpan fasteners and drop the vehicle, then attach the shift cable to the shift lever pin. The rest of the installation is done in the reverse of how it was removed and then fine-tune the shift cable as desired. To adjust it is necessary to take off the knob set screw and the knob from the shifter and take off the center console. Shift the shift lever to the Park position, back off the gearshift cable adjustment screw , and have the shift lever at the transaxle in the Park position as to engage the park sprag. Tighten the shift cable adjustment screw then replaces the center console, and test shift lever, it should move freely with no binding and the engine should only start when the gear shift is in Park or Neutral position. Last of all, engage the transaxle into all the gear to ensure that the cable is in good condition to move and once again make the necessary readjustment.
