    Installation and Repair Tips
    Q:
How to remove and install Crankshaft Pulley and Harmonic Balancer in 3.7L V6 and 4.7L V8 engine on Dodge Dakota? Posted by Customer
    A:
Remove the cable far from the negative terminal of the battery. Disassembly process involves the following: Erase the system cooling fans and also the shroud. Remove the drivebelts and rotate the belt tensioner in the opposite direction to the crankshaft pulley. Coil the strap wrench or chain wrench around the crankshaft pulley and while pulling it with your hand, place a breaker bar and socket on the crankshaft pulley center bolt and turn it counterclockwise until it's loose. For this, there are specific holes provided in the crankshaft and pulley and using a puller use the jaws of the puller in such a way that they grip the hub of the pulley only and not the outer ring, at the same time check that the puller screw does not go into the threads present in the nose of the crankshaft. Examine the oil seal riding surface on the pulley hub; if the surface has been grooved out, an oil seal sleeve may be available which will fit on to the hub and renew the sealing surface and this can be fitted with a hammer and a block of wood. Coat the portion of the hub of the pulley with clean engine oil, ensure that the groove in the pulley is properly engaged with the key on the crankshaft, insert the crankshaft pulley over the crank shaft as far as it may go to be followed by the use of a vibration damper installation tool in forcing it the rest of the way. Replace the crankshaft pulley retaining bolt and tighten it to the recommend torque. The rest of the installation is done in the reverse sequence of what was followed to remove it.

    Q:
How to remove and install Crankshaft Seal and Harmonic Balancer in 5.7L V8 engine on Dodge Dakota? Posted by Customer
    A:
But before doing so, I disconnected the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Remove the engine drivebelt. The coolant should be drained and the upper radiator hose together with the engine cooling fan should be removed. Loosen and then completely remove the massive bolt that connects the large vibration damper to the crankshaft using a chain wrench in such way that the crankshaft does not turn The chain wrench should enclose the outer circumference of the pulley and to avoid damaging the vibration damper, an interposition of a piece of rubber over the chain wrench must be made. A punctual puller must be used to remove the vibration damper with the muscles of the puller encircling the hub only and not the threads in the crankshaft face. If the seal is to be removed with the cover still in the engine block, gently extract it using the seal removing tool or an equally big screw driver without damaging the region where the seal was fitted. Remove the old sealant and corrosive deposits from the bore and place the new one with the sealing edge towards the bore, a drop of oil should be applied to the outer circle of the sealant in order to facilitate the insertion. Insert the seal into the bore with the help of a seal driver or a large socket and a hammer until this seal is flush with the cover flange. Inspect the lever of the damper for grooves, if any then get a new vibration damper. Apply a layer of engine oil on the seal lips and then fit back the vibration damper ensuring the Woodruff key seats properly in the key way of the damper hub then insert the unit to the crankshaft by pressing it with the help of the particular installation tool. Next insert the vibration damper bolt and finally tighten to the required tightness. The rest of an installation is in the reverse order of the removal and last of all, adding water in the cooling system.
