    Q:
How to replace a Manual Transmission Extension Housing Seal on Dodge Ramcharger? Posted by Customer
    A:
This procedure applies to the A-230 and Overdrive-4 transmissions only. The extension housing oil seal is located at the extreme rear of the transmission, where the driveshaft is attached. If leakage at the seal is suspected, raise the rear of the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands, ensuring the front wheels are blocked to prevent rolling. A leaking seal will result in transmission lubricant buildup on the front of the driveshaft, potentially dripping from the dust shield at the rear of the transmission. Begin by removing the driveshaft, then place a container beneath the rear of the extension housing to collect any spilled oil. Carefully pry the oil seal and bushing (for A-230 transmissions) out of the rear of the transmission using a screwdriver or pry bar, taking care not to damage the splines on the transmission output shaft. To install the new oil seal, use a large section of pipe or a very large deep socket as a drift, driving it into the bore squarely and ensuring it is completely seated. Finally, install a new bushing using the same method.

    Q:
How to replace the Manual Transmission Extension Housing Seal and O-rings on Jeep Cherokee? Posted by Customer
    A:
Oil leaks frequently occur due to wear of the extension housing oil seal or the speedometer drive gear oil seal and 0-ring. Replacement of these seals is relatively easy, since the repairs can usually be performed without removing the transmission or transfer case (4WD models) from the vehicle. The extension housing oil seal is located at the extreme rear of the transmission or transfer case, where the driveshaft is attached. If leakage at the seal is suspected, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. If the seal is leaking, transmission lubricant will be built up on the front of the driveshaft and may be dripping from the rear of the transmission or transfer case. Remove the driveshaft using a soft-faced hammer to tap and remove the dust shield (if equipped) from the transmission. Carefully pry the oil seal out of the rear of the transmission or transfer case, making sure not to damage the splines on the transmission output shaft. If the oil seal cannot be removed with a screwdriver or pry bar, a special oil seal removal tool may be required. Use a large section of pipe or a very large deep socket as a drift to install the new oil seal, driving it into the bore squarely and ensuring it is completely seated. Reinstall the dust shield by tapping it into place and lubricate the splines of the transmission output shaft and the outside of the driveshaft sleeve yoke with lightweight grease before installing the driveshaft. Be careful not to damage the lip of the new seal. To check for leaks in the speedometer cable and driven gear housing, look for transmission oil around the cable housing. Disconnect the speedometer cable and mark the relationship of the speedometer adapter to the extension housing. Remove the bolt and withdraw the adapter, then install a new 0-ring and adapter seal on the adapter and reinstall the adapter and cable assembly on the extension housing. Use a small screwdriver to remove the O-ring from the groove and lift the adapter seal from the inside of the housing.
