    Installation and Repair Tips
    Q:
How to remove and reinstall shift cables in a manual transmission on Jeep Compass? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the components, first, take lose the cable connection from the negative side of the battery. Thirdly, remove the centre console (T) and the shift lever assembly (W). Take off the clip that holds the selector cable and shift cable to the shift lever bracket and come off at the lever. Remove the carpet and pull out the wiring from the occupant restraint-control module and then remove its fasteners and the module. Remove the grommet plate-to-floorpan fasteners, and the air filter housing. Next, take out the battery and battery tray as well out of the vehicle. Turning the vehicle on is not necessary in these steps; all that is required is the removal of the two flat blade screwdrivers to disconnect the shift and selector cables at the shifter lever of the transaxle. Both cable retaining clips have to be detached and the cables have to be pulled out of the bracket. Chock the wheels, set the vehicle up on jackstands in a manner that is safe and will not bring injury to any parties involved. During installation the process is done in the reverse manner as removal with new cable retaining clips added and to engage the knob with the lever, one must use a rubber mallet.

    Q:
How to remove and install the shift cable in automatic transmission on Jeep Patriot? Posted by Customer
    A:
Now to remove shift cable first engage the gearshift in park, then unbolt the battery and battery tray and then the air filter housing. Remove the trim panel with your hands, pull the shift cable out and up to remove it from the shift lever; to disconnect further remove the clip with pliers. Second, pop the center console as on the previous stage and disconnect the shift cable from the shifter assembly , one can do it using only trim panel tool and needle-nose pliers to undo the cable fastener screw. Lift the car with jackstands safely, and then detach the grommet of the floor pan and get the shift cable to come out of the hole, while undoing the retainers from below the car, and then fully removing the cable. For installation, reverse the removal steps with considerable emphasis in feeding the shift cable into the passenger compartment and adequate attention to the grommet which should be lubricated if it is necessary. For adjustment, the vehicle must be parked on a flat ground, the parking brake engaged and the shift lever placed in the 'Park' position with the key withdrawn from the ignition. Turn the shift cable adjustment bolt at the transaxle shift lever until it is locked and then push as much as possible the shift lever to the Park position. Screw the adjustment bolt with the required amount of torque, operate the shift lever to evaluate how smooth its movement is and subsequently, the engine should start only if the vehicle is in Park or Neutral. Last, move the transaxle lever through all the gears in order to test the cables and if necessary, make rereadjustment.
