Rotate the engine clockwise by the crankshaft pulley until the V6 or V8 marks on the camshaft sprockets are in the 12 o'clock position.

Change the oil and install a new oil filter, fill the cooling system with the proper coolant, start the engine to check for oil pressure and leaks, and ensure the engine runs at a fast idle for 15 to 20 minutes to break in the new components.

Compare camshaft lobe heights using a micrometer, ensuring that differences do not exceed specified limits.

Remove the front and rear bearing caps first, then the remaining caps.

To begin the installation process, dip the hydraulic lash adjusters in clean engine oil and install them in their original locations. Apply grease or engine assembly lube to the rocker arm contact points and rollers and install them in their original locations. Lubricate the camshaft bearing journals and lobes and carefully install the camshafts in the cylinder head. Install the camshaft bearing caps and tighten them to the specified torque. Rotate the camshafts and verify the alignment holes are in the neutral position. Slide the intake and exhaust phasers onto the camshafts and ensure the marks are aligned. Install the oil control valves into the camshaft phasers and tighten them to the specified torque. Release the tensioner plunger and rotate the engine to verify the alignment marks.

Inspect the camshaft sprockets for wear, check the chains for cracks or excessive wear, and visually examine the camshaft bearing surfaces for damage.

The timing system is complex, and severe engine damage will occur if mistakes are made. Only attempt this procedure if highly experienced with this type of repair, and consult an expert if unsure of abilities.
