    Installation and Repair Tips
    Q:
What is the function and replacement process of the Clock Spring and Wiper Switch on Jeep Compass? Posted by Customer
    A:
The switch near the left side of the steering wheel controls both interior and exterior lighting; the visible part constitutes merely the oval knob; actually switch is located inside the column and is non-disassemblable hence either has to be replaced as the whole unit. This switch controls headlamp high and low beam, fog lamp (if), park lamp, turn signal, interior lamp disable, interior light, and panel light dimming control; it requires the use of scan tools for diagnosing. It communes in serial data signals, it is unnecessary and unadvisable to isolate it with jumper wires, tests must be done with a scan tool. First of all, remove the negative terminal of the battery. After that, unbolt the upper and lower steering column covers, then disconnect the multi-function switch by unscrewing its mounting screw and pulling it out as the tabs that retain it will lock into position and the electrical connector will then have to be disconnected. Installation is done in the reverse order to that in which the parts/carpentary work was done. The clockspring is integrated with steering column control module (SCCM), which is equipped with data signals from different drivers and cannot be disassembled; the SCCM has to be replaced but the wiper and multi-function switches can be replaced individually. Steer the wheel to the straight ahead position before releasing it and then again remove the upper and lower steering column shrouds. Push a pin through the locking hole of the clockspring so it cannot rotate, then remove the three screws which hold the SCCM in place, disconnect both electrical connectors to the SCCM, and finally, remove the SCCM; to replace it, work backwards from this process. The wiper switch can be accessed after the upper and lower steering column have been removed, this will make way for the removal of the screw securing the switch with the SCCM, the switch can then be pulled straight up to release it's tabs, one can then disconnect the electrical connector, to reassemble, reverse the aforementioned procedure.
