Jeep 5139207AA Cylinder-Ignition Lock

The problem may not be in the ignition switch or key lock cylinder.It could be due to an out-of-adjustment transmission shift cable or Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) cable.

Remove the screw attaching the ignition key module to the lock cylinder, unhook the module retainer fingers, and position the module back on the lock cylinder.

Remove the knee bolster and the steering column covers.

Connect the cable to the negative battery terminal.

Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Pry off the ignition switch bezel and instrument cluster bezel. Insert the ignition key and turn it to the ON position. Depress the retaining pin and remove the key lock cylinder from the steering column. Before installing the new key lock cylinder, ensure the ignition key is still in the ON position and align the D-shaped lug with the socket in the lock cylinder housing. Push the lock cylinder into the ignition switch until it clicks into place.

If the key is difficult to turn, the issue may not lie with the switch or lock cylinder. In vehicles with automatic transmissions that have floor console-mounted shifters, the Park/Lock cable might require adjustment. If the cable is defective within the steering column, the entire column must be replaced. For manual transmission vehicles, the small button behind the key cylinder could be faulty, necessitating a replacement of the steering column.

The installation process is the reverse of removal.
