    Q:
How to Remove and Install a Harmonic Balancer in a Six Cylinder Engine on Jeep Cherokee? Posted by Customer
    A:
Disconnect the negative cable from the battery. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the belly pan which is mounted below the front of the engine. Remove the drivebelts. Remove the radiator and cooling fan(s). Remove the harmonic balancer retaining bolt and washer. To prevent the crankshaft from rotating, place two 5/16 x 1-1/2- inch long bolts into the balancer holes and hold a pry bar between them. Rotate the crankshaft until the bar contacts the frame. Using a harmonic balancer removal tool, pull the balancer off the crankshaft. Clean and inspect the area on the center hub of the balancer where the front crankshaft oil seal contacts it. Minor imperfections can be cleaned up with emery cloth. If there is a groove worn in the hub, replace the harmonic balancer or have a special sleeve installed on the hub to restore the contact surface. Apply clean engine oil to the seal contact surface of the balancer hub. Align the key slot of the harmonic balancer hub with the crankshaft key and tap the balancer onto the crankshaft with a soft-face mallet. Install the harmonic balancer bolt and tighten it to the specified torque. Reinstall the remaining parts in the reverse order of removal.

    Q:
How to properly remove and install a crankshaft pulley in 3.8L V6 engine on Jeep Wrangler? Posted by Customer
    A:
Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Remove the serpentine drivebelt. Take off the driveplate cover and position a large screwdriver in the ring gear teeth to prevent the crankshaft from turning while a helper removes the crankshaft pulley-to-crankshaft bolt using a breaker bar and a socket. Pull the crankshaft pulley off the crankshaft with a two-jaw puller attached to the inner hub, ensuring not to pull on the outer edge of the pulley to avoid damage. Install the crankshaft pulley using a special installation tool that threads to the crankshaft in place of the crankshaft pulley bolt, applying clean engine oil or multi-purpose grease to the seal contact surface of the damper hub to prevent damage to the seal lip and oil leakage. If the tool is unavailable, the crankshaft pulley bolt and several washers as spacers may be used, ensuring the torque on the crankshaft pulley bolt is not exceeded. Remove the tool and install the crankshaft pulley bolt, tightening it to the specified torque. Reinstall the remaining components in the reverse order of removal.

    Q:
How to replace the Harmonic Balancer in a 4.0L and 4.2L V6 engine on Jeep Wrangler? Posted by Customer
    A:
Disconnect the negative cable from the battery, then raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the splash pan mounted below the front of the engine, followed by the drivebelts. Next, take out the radiator and cooling fan(s). Remove the harmonic balancer retaining bolt and washer; to prevent the crankshaft from rotating, place two 5/16 x 1-1/2-inch long bolts into the balancer holes and hold a pry bar between them, then rotate the crankshaft until the bar contacts the frame. Using a puller that bolts to the hub of the balancer, pull the balancer off the crankshaft, avoiding gear pullers with jaws to prevent damage. Clean and inspect the area on the center hub of the balancer where the front oil seal contacts it, using fine emery cloth for minor imperfections. If a groove is worn in the hub, replace the harmonic balancer or install a special sleeve to restore the contact surface. Apply clean engine oil to the seal contact surface of the balancer hub, align the key slot of the harmonic balancer hub with the crankshaft key, and tap the balancer onto the crankshaft with a soft-face mallet. Install the harmonic balancer bolt and tighten it to the specified torque, then reinstall the remaining parts in the reverse order of removal.

    Q:
What are the steps and precautions for replacing or installing a Harmonic Balancer in a 3.6L V6 engine on Jeep Wrangler? Posted by Customer
    A:
Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the drivebelt. The harmonic balancer bolt is incredibly tight; using a breaker bar, socket, and special tool #10198 or equivalent, hold the balancer from turning while loosening the bolt. Pull the harmonic balancer off the crankshaft, sliding the pulley from the end without requiring a puller. Apply clean engine oil or multi-purpose grease to the seal contact surface of the balancer hub to prevent damage to the seal lip and oil leakage. Install the harmonic balancer, aligning the keyway on the crankshaft with the slot in the balancer, then install the bolt and tighten it by hand. Prevent the engine from rotating, then tighten the bolt to the specified torque. Installation of the remaining components follows the reverse order of removal.
