    Q:
How to remove and reinstall rocker arms and pushrods while ensuring proper maintenance and inspection in 4.0L and 4.2L V6 engine on Jeep Wrangler? Posted by Customer
    A:
Remove the valve cover and, beginning at the front of the cylinder head, loosen and remove the rocker arm mounting bolts in pairs, alternating between the intake and exhaust rocker arms, loosening each bolt 1/4-turn at a time. Remove the rocker arms, bridges, and fulcrums, storing them with their respective mounting bolts in marked plastic bags to ensure reinstallation in their original locations, while noting that the bridges may be reinstalled in any location. Remove the pushrods and store them separately to avoid mixing during installation. Check each rocker arm for wear, cracks, and other damage, particularly where the pushrods and valve stems contact the rocker arm faces, as well as the fulcrum seat and faces for galling, stress cracks, and unusual wear patterns; replace any worn or damaged rocker arms and install new fulcrums. Ensure the oil hole at the pushrod end of each rocker arm is open, inspect the pushrods for cracks and excessive wear at the ends, and roll each pushrod across a piece of plate glass to check for bending. Lubricate the lower end of each pushrod with clean engine oil or moly-base grease and install it in its original location, ensuring each pushrod seats completely in the lifter socket. Bring the number one piston to Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke, apply moly-base grease to the ends of the valve stems and the upper ends of the pushrods before placing the rocker arms in position, and also apply moly-base grease to the fulcrums to prevent damage to the mating surfaces before engine oil pressure builds up. Install the rocker arms, fulcrums, bridges, and bolts in their original locations, tightening the bolts to the specified torque, then install the valve cover. Start the engine, listen for unusual valve train noises, and check for oil leaks at the valve cover joint.

    Q:
How to detach the valve cover and reinstall the rocker arms and pushrods in 2.5L four cylinder engine on Jeep Wrangler? Posted by Customer
    A:
Detach the valve cover from the cylinder head and, starting at the front, loosen the rocker arm bolts. Remove the cap screws, bridges, pivots, and rocker arms, storing them in marked containers to ensure they are reinstalled in their original locations. Take out the pushrods and store them separately to avoid mix-ups during installation, using a perforated cardboard box if multiple pushrods are removed, noting the label indicating the front of the engine. Inspect each rocker arm for wear, cracks, and damage, particularly at the contact points with the pushrods and valve stems, ensuring the hole at the pushrod end is clear. Check the pivot area of each rocker arm for wear, cracks, and galling; replace any worn or damaged rocker arms and pivots with new ones. Examine the pushrods for cracks and excessive wear at the ends, rolling each across a piece of plate glass to check for bending. Lubricate the lower ends of the pushrods with clean engine oil or moly-base grease and reinstall them in their original locations, ensuring each seats completely in the lifter socket. Apply moly-base grease to the ends of the valve stems and the upper ends of the pushrods before positioning the rocker arms and installing the cap screws. Set the rocker arms in place, then install the pivots, bridges, and cap screws, applying moly-base grease to the pivots to protect the mating surfaces before engine oil pressure builds up, and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. Finally, reinstall the valve cover and run the engine, checking for oil leaks and unusual valve train noises.
