The procedure for removing the fuel tank is much easier if the tank is empty. If it is not empty, you can use a siphon kit to remove the fuel. First, relieve the fuel system pressure. Then, disconnect the negative terminal of the battery. Next, raise the rear of the vehicle and support it with jackstands. Remove the fuel pump module and, on AWD models, the auxiliary module. If equipped, remove the fuel tank skid plate(s). Detach the parking brake cable mounting straps from the fuel tank strap studs. Remove the exhaust pipe and muffler from below the fuel tank. For AWD models, remove the rear differential support bracket fasteners and brackets, as well as the driveshaft and rear differential electronically controlled clutch. For all models, remove the left and right stay brackets between the rear crossmember and chassis, if equipped, and remove the splash shields from each side at the front of the tank, if equipped. Loosen the hose clamp and disconnect the fuel filler hose. Disconnect the fuel line and EVAP line quick-connect fittings located at the front of the fuel tank. Support the fuel tank with a transmission jack or floor jack, using a piece of plywood to protect the tank. Remove the fuel tank support strap bolts and carefully lower the fuel tank from the vehicle, ensuring no hoses or wiring harnesses are still attached. Installation is the reverse of removal, making sure to tighten the fuel tank strap bolts securely. Finally, start the engine and check for any leaks at the fuel line connectors that were disconnected.
