To remove the steering wheel, start by parking the vehicle with the wheels straight ahead and the steering wheel centered. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery. Remove the airbag module by taking out the two bolts on either side of the steering wheel access holes. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the airbag module and set it aside. Disconnect the steering wheel wiring harness connector at the clock spring. Loosen the steering wheel retaining bolt and use a puller with hooked legs to break the wheel loose from the shaft. Be careful not to hammer or use a slide hammer puller. Tape the clockspring to prevent it from turning.

On 2008 and later models, follow these steps to remove the airbag module retainer, locate the three airbag retainer access holes on the back side of the steering wheel. Insert a short blade screwdriver or plastic trim prying tool into either of the upper access holes of the steering wheel cover. Use the tool to move the retainer wire loop off of the latch. Remove the airbag away from the steering wheel far enough to reach the wiring on the rear of the airbag.

To install the steering wheel, ensure the clockspring is centered, the wheels are straight ahead, and the turn signal stalk is in the neutral position. If the clockspring is uncentered, turn it clockwise until it stops, then counter clockwise approximately 2-1/2 turns. Install the wheel on the steering shaft, aligning the splines. Ensure the clockspring lines up on the back of the steering wheel. Install a new steering wheel retaining bolt and tighten it. Reconnect the clockspring connector and the electrical connectors to the airbag module. Install the module to the steering wheel and tighten the fasteners. Finally, reconnect the negative battery terminal and verify the airbag system is operating properly.
