The steering linkage and suspension components should be checked periodically. Worn or damaged suspension and steering components can result in excessive and abnormal tire wear, poor ride quality and vehicle handling, and reduced fuel economy. To check the shock absorbers/struts, park the vehicle on level ground, turn off the engine, and set the parking brake. Push down at each corner of the vehicle and observe the movement of the body. It should stop moving and come to rest in a level position within one or two bounces. If the vehicle continues to move up and down or fails to return to its original position, a worn or weak shock absorber or strut assembly is likely the cause. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands to inspect the shock absorbers/struts for evidence of fluid leakage and to ensure they are securely mounted and undamaged. Check the upper mounts for damage and wear. If leakage or damage is noted, replace the shocks/struts as a set. For the suspension and steering check, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands. Grasp each front tire at the front and rear edges, push in at the front, pull out at the rear, and feel for play in the steering system components. If any free play is noted, check the tie-rod ends for looseness. Lower the vehicle and check the ball joints. Inspect the steering gear boots for cracks and loose clamps. If lubricant is leaking from the boots, the rack seals have failed, and the steering gear will need to be replaced or overhauled by a professional.
