To check the battery state of charge, look at the indicator eye on the top of the battery (if equipped). A green indicator eye means the battery is 75 to 100 percent charged, black indicates 0 to 75 percent charged, and clear or bright indicates low electrolyte level. Maintenance-free batteries with clear indicator eyes should be replaced, while low-maintenance batteries with removable cell caps can have distilled water added to the correct level. Perform an open-voltage circuit test using a voltmeter to check the battery voltage, ensuring the surface charge is removed for accurate measurement. A fully charged battery should have at least 12.4 volts. Charge the battery if the voltage is lower. Perform a battery load test with a battery load tester to assess the battery's ability to handle heavy amperage draw. A fully functional battery should not drop below 9.6 volts during the test.For battery removal and installation on 2010 and earlier models, disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal first, then the positive terminal. Remove the battery hold-down bolt and clamp. On 2011 and later models with the battery located remotely inside the vehicle, remove the battery access cover, disconnect the battery cables starting with the negative cable, and remove any interfering connectors or vent tubes. Remove the battery hold-down fasteners and clamp, then lift the battery out. Inspect and clean the battery tray for corrosion deposits if necessary. Replace the battery with an identical one. Installation is the reverse of removal.For the auxiliary battery on 2016 and later models, gain access to the battery, unplug the electrical connector from the Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS) if equipped, and disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the main battery and the auxiliary battery. Disconnect the cable from the positive terminal of the auxiliary battery and the vent hose from both batteries. Remove the nut from the auxiliary battery hold-down strap and lift the battery from the tray. Installation is the reverse of removal.For the battery tray, remove the battery, detach the wiring harness, and remove the fasteners securing the battery tray to the fender and frame rail. Installation is the reverse of removal.

If a maintenance-required battery is installed, check the electrolyte level in each cell and add distilled water if necessary.
