Later models have a brake/transmission shift interlock cable that stops the transmission from shifting unless the brake pedal is pressed. To remove it, remove the steering column lower shroud, headlight switch knob and shaft, and steering column opening cover. Remove the center console assembly and disconnect the cable eyelet from the bell crank on the shift lever. To install, reverse the process and adjust the cable. Check the adjustment by ensuring the transmission cannot be shifted without applying the brake, the ignition key doesn't go to the LOCK position when shifting, and the shift lever can't be moved out of Park when the ignition key is in the LOCK position. If not, readjust the cable.

To check and adjust the shift linkage on various models, first, engage the parking brake and briefly operate the starter in each shift lever position to ensure it only works in Park and Neutral; if not, adjust the shift linkage or inspect the neutral start switch. For 1984 through 1993 models, if adjustment is needed, place the shift lever in Park, raise the vehicle, and loosen the shift rod jam nut for three-speed transmissions or release the adjuster clamp for four-speed transmissions. Ensure the park lock is engaged and then adjust the shift rod trunnion or snap the shift cable back into place as needed to eliminate lash. Lower the vehicle, retest the starter, and check the steering wheel lock. For 1994 and later models, follow a similar process, releasing the cable adjuster clamp to unlock the cable from the shift lever at the transmission end. Ensure the shift lever is in Park, confirm the park lock is engaged, snap the cable back into place, and lock it into the transmission bracket with the adjuster clamp. Lower the vehicle, retest the starter, and inspect the steering wheel lock. For 1994 and later models with a floor shift, remove the center console, place the shift lever in Park, raise the vehicle, and turn the ignition switch to the Lock position. Release and relock the cable, then check the adjustment by testing the release shift handle button, shifting to Neutral, and attempting to turn the ignition switch to Lock and D positions. Return the shift lever to Park, confirm the ignition switch operates correctly, and lower the vehicle, reinstalling the center console if necessary.
