Firmly apply the parking brake and try to momentarily operate the starter in each shift lever position; the starter should operate in Park and Neutral only. If it operates in any position other than Park or Neutral, adjust the shift linkage. Place the shift lever in Park and remove the center console. Unbolt the shifter assembly from the floor pan and pry the cable end off the pin on the shift lever using a prying tool. Detach the cable from the shifter base by squeezing the tangs on the shift cable retainer. Remove the cable seal plate from the floor pan by taking off the mounting nuts. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Detach the cable end from the shift lever on the transmission, which is connected with a ball-and-socket type connector, by prying the cable end loose from the small pin on the lever. Detach the cable from the bracket at the transmission by pinching the housing tabs together with pliers and pulling the cable and housing through the bracket. Push the cable through the floor pan and remove it from the vehicle. Installation is the reverse of removal, and adjust the cable afterward. Place the shift lever in Park again and remove the center console. Loosen the shifter cable adjustment screw at the shift lever, then raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Detach the cable end from the shift lever on the transmission and from the bracket at the transmission. Ensure the shift lever on the transmission is all the way to the rear in the last detent, which is the Park position. Verify that the park lock is engaged by trying to rotate the driveshaft; it should not rotate if functioning properly. Recheck that the gearshift lever inside the vehicle is still in the Park position, then attach the cable end to the shift lever on the transmission and the cable to the bracket at the transmission. Tighten the shifter cable adjustment screw at the shifter to 65 in-lbs (7Nm), lower the vehicle, and with the parking brake firmly applied, ensure the engine starts only in Park and Neutral. The remainder of installation follows the reverse of removal.
