A:
To check and replace the ignition coil on models except for 2000 and later inline six-cylinder models, follow these steps:a. Start by detaching the negative battery cable.b. Locate the ignition coil, typically found on the right side of the engine compartment.c. If needed, remove the coil by unscrewing the mounting bracket bolts.d. If the coil is not removed, disconnect the wires from the high voltage and primary terminals of the coil.e. Use an ohmmeter set on the high resistance scale to perform resistance tests.f. Test the primary terminal to ground, which should indicate infinite resistance.g. Test the positive primary terminal to the negative terminal, which should indicate zero or close to zero resistance.h. Test the negative primary terminal to the high voltage terminal, which should not indicate infinite resistance.i. Replace the coil if any of these tests fail.j. For replacement,if not. f. Note that the entire assembly must be replaced if only one coil is defective. g. For replacement, remove the ignition coil rail assembly mounting bolts, carefully work the spark plug boots off the spark plugs, and disconnect the electrical connector from the coil rail. h. Then, remove the ignition coil rail assembly, and when installing the new one, make sure all spark plug boots are properly seated over the spark plugs. i. Q:
How to remove and install the pickup coil assembly in a distributor? Posted by Customer
A:
Detach the cable from the negative battery terminal. The following procedure may be easier if you remove the distributor but it's not absolutely necessary that you do so. If you do decide to remove the distributor, place it in a bench vise. Remove the distributor cap and rotor. Using a small puller tool, remove the trigger wheel. Use a flat washer to prevent the puller from contacting the inner shaft. Remove the pin. Remove the pickup coil assembly retainer and washers from the pivot pin on the base plate. Remove the two pickup coil plate screws. Lift the pickup coil assembly from the distributor housing. Position the pickup coil assembly into the distributor housing. Make sure the pin on the pickup coil assembly fits into the hole in the vacuum advance mechanism link. Install the washers and retainer on the pivot pin to secure the pickup coil assembly to the base plate. Position the wiring harness in the slot in the distributor housing. Install the two pickup coil plate screws and tighten them securely. Install the trigger wheel on the shaft with hand pressure. The long portion of the teeth must face up. When the trigger wheel and slot in the shaft are properly aligned, use a pin punch and a small hammer to tap the pin into the locating groove in the trigger wheel and shaft. If the distributor is not installed in the engine, support the shaft while installing the trigger wheel pin. Install the rotor and the distributor cap. Attach the cable to the negative battery terminal.

Q:
How do you replace the ignition coil on 1999 and earlier 2014 Jeep Wrangler? Posted by Customer
A:
To replace the ignition coil on 1999 and earlier models, start by detaching the cable from the negative battery terminal. Mark the wires and terminals with numbered tape, then remove the primary wires and high-tension cable from the coil. Disconnect the coil mounting bracket and remove the coil/bracket assembly. Clean the outer case and check for damage. Clean the coil primary terminals and check for corrosion. Check the coil primary resistance by attaching an ohmmeter to the positive and negative terminals. Check the coil secondary resistance by hooking one ohmmeter lead to the primary terminals and the other to the high-tension terminal. If the resistances are not as specified, replace the coil. Install the new coil and hook up the wires, then reattach the cable to the negative battery terminal.
