The manufacturer states that a new shaft coupler bolt is necessary for installation. Begin by parking the vehicle with the wheels pointing straight ahead and disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal, waiting at least two minutes to allow the backup power supply for the airbag system to deplete. Remove the steering wheel and turn the ignition key to the LOCK position to prevent the steering shaft from turning, as failing to do so could damage the airbag clockspring. Tape the steering column to limit rotation and remove the knee bolster. For 2011 and earlier models, remove the steering column covers and disconnect the electrical connectors. Tape the steering column module and slide it off the column as an assembly. Remove the cross bolt and slide the column down off the bracket, then remove the pinch bolt at the lower part of the column. Remove the steering column mounting nuts, lower the column, and pull it to the rear, ensuring nothing is still connected. For installation, guide the steering column into position and install the mounting nuts without tightening them yet. Connect the intermediate shaft to the steering column, install a new coupler bolt, and tighten the nut to the specified torque. Finally, tighten the column mounting nuts to the specified torque, and complete the installation by reversing the removal steps.
