- A:This system is designed to trap and store fuel vapors that would normally be released into the atmosphere as hydrocarbon emissions. It consists of a charcoal-filled canister, a purge solenoid, a rollover/separator valve, and connecting lines and hoses. The canister absorbs fuel vapor when the engine is off or cold, and releases it to the intake manifold or air cleaner as the engine warms up. The canister is purged using engine vacuum controlled by the logic module. The relief valve in the fuel tank filler cap vents the tank when pressure or vacuum reaches a certain level. To check the system, inspect the canister and lines for damage, and check the filler cap for a damaged gasket.
