    Installation and Repair Tips
    Q:
How to Remove and Install a Steering Knuckle on Jeep Grand Cherokee? Posted by Customer
    A:
Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts, raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands before removing the wheels. Next, loosen and remove the driveaxle/hub nut and discard it. Remove the brake caliper and hang it safely out of the way, then take out the parking brake shoes. Detach the parking brake cable from the knuckle. Using a floor jack, support the outer end of the control arm, then remove the rear coil spring. Tilt the knuckle and detach the outer c/v joint on the drive axle from the knuckle. Remove the lower ball joint nut, lower the jack supporting the outer control arm/knuckle, and take out the knuckle. If necessary, remove and transfer the hub to the new knuckle. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring to tighten the fasteners to the specified torque and using a new driveaxle/hub nut when installing the driveaxle.

    Q:
How to remove and inspect the steering knuckle on Jeep Grand Cherokee? Posted by Customer
    A:
If you're working on a 4WD model, remove the driveaxle/hub nut. Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands before removing the wheel. Remove the brake disc and wheel speed sensor, and if equipped with 4WD, take out the axle shaft nut. Next, remove the three hub bearing mounting bolts and take off the hub/bearing. Remove the outer tie-rod end retaining nut and separate the outer tie-rod end from the steering knuckle. Loosen the nut on the lower balljoint stud without removing it, then disconnect the balljoint from the steering knuckle using a balljoint removal tool; if you lack this tool, a picklefork type separator can be used, but it may damage the balljoint boot. Repeat this for the upper balljoint stud and then remove the knuckle. Carefully inspect the steering knuckle for cracks, particularly around the steering arm and spindle mounting area, and check the balljoint stud holes for elongation or cracks; if any issues are found, replace the steering knuckle. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring all suspension fasteners are tightened to the specified torque.
