    Installation and Repair Tips
    Q:
How to remove and install the rear Steering Knuckle on Dodge Neon? Posted by Customer
    A:
Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and support it on jack stands. Block the front wheels and remove the rear wheel. For models with ABS, remove the wheel speed sensor from the brake backing plate. For models with rear drum brakes, remove the rear brake drum and brake shoe assembly, disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever, and disconnect the brake hose from the wheel cylinder. For models with rear disc brakes, remove the caliper and brake disc, remove the parking brake shoes, and disconnect the parking brake cable from the actuator lever. Remove the rear hub and bearing assembly. For models with rear drum brakes, unbolt the brake backing plate by removing four bolts and take it off. For models with rear disc brakes, unbolt the adapter mounting plate and remove it. Loosen, but do not remove, the rear strut-to-knuckle mounting nuts. Remove the nut and bolt that attach the lateral links to the knuckle, followed by the nut and washer that attach the trailing arm to the knuckle. Remove the rear strut-to-knuckle mounting nuts and bolts, then slide the spindle down and out of the strut clevis bracket. Installation is the reverse of removal. Finally, install the wheel and lug nuts, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque.

    Q:
How to remove and reinstall the hub and steering knuckle assembly on Dodge Neon? Posted by Customer
    A:
With the vehicle weight resting on the front suspension, remove the hub cap, cotter pin, nut lock, and spring washer, then loosen the front hub nut and wheel lug nuts without removing them. Raise the front of the vehicle, support it securely on jack stands, and remove the front wheels. Remove the caliper and brake pads, taking care not to twist the brake hose, and hang the caliper out of the way in the wheel well with a piece of wire. If equipped with ABS, remove the wheel speed sensor from the steering knuckle. Disconnect the tie-rod end from the steering knuckle, move it out of the way, and secure it with wire. Detach the lower control arm ball joint from the steering knuckle. With the knuckle and hub assembly in the straight-ahead position, grasp it securely and pull it directly out and off the drive axle splines, being careful not to pull the drive axle out, which may disengage the inner CV joint; it may be necessary to tap on the axle end with a soft-face hammer to dislodge it from the hub. Mark the position of the strut to the steering knuckle if special camber adjusting bolts have been installed. Remove the strut-to-steering knuckle nuts and bolts, then remove the steering knuckle. Place the assembly on a clean work surface and wipe it off with a lint-free cloth, inspecting the knuckle for rust, damage, and cracks, and checking the bearings for free movement without excessive noise or looseness, ensuring they are packed with clean grease. Prior to installation, clean the CV joint seal and hub grease seal with solvent, avoiding contact with the CV joint boot, and lubricate the CV joint wear sleeve and seal contact surface with multi-purpose grease. Carefully place the knuckle and hub assembly in position, aligning the splines of the axle and the hub, and slide the hub into place. Install the knuckle-to-strut bolts and nuts, followed by the ball joint pinch bolt and nut, ensuring not to turn serrated bolts but to hold them stationary while tightening the nuts. Tighten all fasteners to the specified torque, reattach the tie-rod end to the steering knuckle, and tighten the nut. Install the brake disc, pads, and caliper, then push the CV joint completely into the hub to ensure it is seated, installing the washer and hub nut finger tight. Install the wheels and lug nuts, lower the vehicle, and tighten the wheel lug nuts. With an assistant applying the brakes, tighten the hub nut, then install the spring washer, nut lock, and a new cotter pin. If special camber adjusting bolts have been installed previously, have the front end alignment checked and adjusted if necessary.
