    Installation and Repair Tips
    Q:
How to remove and install an oil pan in V6 engine on Jeep Cherokee? Posted by Customer
    A:
Disconnect the battery and drain the oil to remove the oil pan. You can detach the starter motor and exhaust pipes, then detach the pan. Also, clean the gasket surfaces and bolt holes before reinstallation. For 1984 models, check for distortion and apply RTV sealant. Use a new gasket kit for installation. For 1985 and 1986 models, inspect for deformation and replace if needed. Tighten bolts to the specified torque and check for leaks.

    Q:
How to replace the oil pan and oil pump in 4.0L and 4.2L V6 engine on Jeep Wrangler? Posted by Customer
    A:
Disconnect the negative cable from the battery, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, then remove the belly pan from under the front of the engine. Drain the oil and replace the oil filter, followed by removing the starter motor and the bellhousing inspection cover from the front of the transmission. Detach the steering damper from the center steering link, support the front axle with a jack, and remove the lower shock absorber bolts. Lower the jack to allow the axle to hang free, then mark the locations of the oil pan mounting studs with paint for proper reassembly. Remove the oil pan mounting bolts/studs and carefully separate the pan from the engine block, gently tapping the side of the pan with a soft-face mallet if it sticks. If necessary, set the oil pan on the axle and remove the oil pump and pick-up tube, detaching the oil pump after removing the two attaching bolts. Slide the oil pan out to the rear, thoroughly clean the mating surfaces, and check the oil pan flange for distortion and warpage, straightening it if needed. Position new gaskets on the pan with Jeep Spray-a-Gasket or equivalent, applying RTV sealant at the corners where the gaskets join and coating the inside curved surface of the replacement rear gasket section with soap. Slide the oil pan up under the engine, reinstall the oil pump and pick-up tube, tightening the oil pump mounting bolts to the specified torque, then install the oil pan and tighten the bolts to the specified torque, working from the center out in several steps. Reinstall the remaining parts in reverse order of removal, check that the drain plug is tight, and add the specified amount of oil before running the engine to check for oil leaks.

    Q:
How to disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery and replace the oil pan in 3.8L V6 engine on Jeep Wrangler? Posted by Customer
    A:
Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, applying the parking brake and blocking the rear wheels to prevent rolling. Drain the engine oil and remove the oil filter, then take out the oil dipstick and dipstick tube. Remove the 7 bolts securing the lower driveplate structural cover and take out the starter. Next, remove the upper oil pan bolts and nuts, carefully separating the upper oil pan from the engine block. Remove the structural cover and the upper pan-to-engine bolts, using a soft face hammer to loosen the oil pan without denting it. Clean the pan with solvent, removing all old sealant and gasket material from the engine block and pan mating surfaces, and ensure the bolt holes in the engine block are clear. Check the oil pan flange for distortion, especially around the bolt holes. Apply a bead of RTV sealant to the bottom surface of the timing chain cover and the bottom of the rear main oil seal retainer where they meet the block, then install a new gasket on the oil pan flange. Position the oil pan on the engine block and install the nuts and bolts, tightening them to the specified torque in a criss-cross pattern, starting from the center and working up to the final torque in three steps. Reinstall the remaining components in reverse order, then install a new oil filter and refill the engine with oil, running it until normal operating temperature is reached and checking for leaks.
